About North Lambeth

North Lambeth is one of the most exciting areas of London. The arts are thriving here and the Millennium has inspired a surge of creative energy. Futuristic, youthful and at the same time deeply rooted in the past, North Lambeth is the place to experience the spirit of the Millennium.

Facing the Houses of Parliament across the Thames is Lambeth Palace, historic home of the Archbishops of Canterbury. North Lambeth's spectactular riverside walk also takes in the South Bank arts complex including the Royal Festival Hall, the National Theatre, the Hayward Gallery, the National Film Theatre, Queen Elizabeth Hall and the Museum of the Moving Image.

Westminster Bridge is one of the unforgettable scenes of the capital, while the world's biggest ferris wheel stands above the river to provide a breath-taking Millennium experience for South Bank visitors.

County Hall, former home of the Greater London Council, lies south of Westminster Bridge. Its new incumbents include a vast aquarium and hotel. St Thomas' Hospital, also housing the Florence Nightingale Museum, is nearby.

The spectacular IMAX 3D cinema is a new arrival at Waterloo. Other key attractions are the Old and Young Vic theatres and the Imperial War Museum. Coin Street Festival, in summer, provides three months of outdoor entertainment. Tube, bus and rail access is excellent.

Waterloo Station is the capital's gateway to Europe through the Eurostar Channel Tunnel link. The street market at Lower Marsh has been part of an established community for centuries. The surrounding streets and Cornwall Road are conservation areas - but alongside the more modern housing estates they include some of the poorest parts of London.

Lambeth Council is tackling a backlog of social and economic problems by active involvement in regeneration partnerships such as Lambeth Walk. The South Bank Partnership is a consortium of private and public sector bodies, promoting projects such as the work at Jubilee Gardens to create an attractive public park.

The Cross River Partnership unites the London Boroughs of Westminster, Southwark, Lambeth and the Corporation of London plus bodies such as Railtrack and the London Tourist Board. Its projects include new footbridges across the Thames at Hungerford Bridge, a new riverbus, a modern tram system and employment and training work. A pedestrian piazza at the front of Waterloo Station is its latest scheme.
