Lido faces closure if funds not found - 19/07/02
Brockwell Park Lido is in dire financial straits and could well soon be facing closure, despite the support of local residents.
The unsettled weather of May and June clearly bit the Lido's income very hard. At the same time, Evian, who provided capital funding last year, have this year stumped up £10,000 in cash - some some way short of the £100,000 the Lido needs annually to survive.
We spoke to Patrick Castledine from the Brockwell Park Lido who told us: "Every year, we're facing a £100,000 defecit. The functions we hold, as well as the yoga and Whippersnappers (kids' workshops), all help but this year, we're still £50k short." What's more, the Lido is due to go out to tender in October 2003. "Someone else will be owning the Lido - but we, the limited company, will still owe all the debts" added Mr Castledine.
According to Mr Castledine, depsite the fine weather boosting attendances, the Lido may well have to close within two weeks - and believes the Council are refusing to do anything about this very unfortunate situation. "Basically, the Council brought in some consultants to look at our funding. They made recommendations, saying we should get £30,000 revenue, and substantial capital funding - but for some reason, the Council are not following up these recommendations." Letters have been written to Faith Boardman, chief executive of Lambeth Council, asking why the council are refusing to take action and warning them that the Lido will soon close.
If you wish to support the Lido, you can get involved in the Brockwell Lido Users Group who are lobbying hard to keep this South London institution open. Check out their website www.brockwelllido.com where you can find all the information you need to show your support.
Fund-raising gala - 02/07/01
Pool party lovers will be wetting their whistles at Brockwell Par's Evian Lido this Saturday, as they host a swish, black-tie gala dinner to raise funds. Tickets, which cost £55 a head include a five course meal, opera singers, Gershwin band, string quartet and magician.
Surf's up at the Brockwell Lido for this bank holiday weekend - 25/04/01
It's going to be a scorcher this weekend, and luckily for all you Brixton water babies your pool is back from the brink of "going under" by the water company Evian.
As well as opening for this summer, the Lido will also get a facelift, with fresh changing rooms, beach furniture, poolside decking, and palm trees. The essential repairs of £250,000 would not have been able to be afforded even after a helping hand by the council in April.
Beastie Boys to hit Brockwell Park 31/07/01
Brockwell Park will be the place to be for Beastie Boys lovers on September 15 when they play their annual Tibetan Freedom gig. Joining them will be Pulp and ex-Clash front man Joe Strummer. Apparently the band were also trying to nab Robbie Williams, hoping his name will pack a bit more punch to the already brillant line-up. After the gig their will also be an all-night held at the Brixton Academy, although DJ's have yet to be confirmed. Speaking to nme.com, recently, Beastie Boy Adam Yauch said: "It's great when we can find an artist with a fan base who might not know so much about the situation in Tibet, or who doesn't overlap with some of the other performers. That way, new people find out what's going on." There's also rumours flying around that Basement Jaxx are planning a one-off 'Rooty' event at the park's lido, and Sunday Best are planning events there too.
