About Brixton

Brixton President Mandela's visit in 1996 confirmed Brixton's international role in promoting racial and social harmony.

As a centre for black media and culture, Brixton is the home of Choice FM radio and the Voice newspaper, the Black Cultural Archives, several galleries, arts and design projects. The biggest music venue in south London, the Brixton Academy, attracts top names and features regularly in sell-out tours.

The Fridge draws night clubbers from across south east England. Brixton has its own independent cinema, the Ritzy, and a theatre at the Brix housed in the converted St Matthew's Church.

Work out at the Recreation Centre and join some of the stars of sport - swim, sauna or try indoor bowls. It's a busy place.There are many small businesses and centres such as Bon Marche and Eurolink are hives of activity.

The Brixton Cycles co-operative is typical of the energy and enterprise that flourishes in Brixton. Brockwell Park is a lovely open space which hosts the massive Lambeth Country Show each year.

Brockwell Lido is the coolest place to meet friends in the heat of the summer. Discovering night clubs, bars and restaurants in Brixton could be a full time occupation. Look up Club 414, the Dogstar, the Bug Bar, Joseph's and the Prince of Wales.

Shopping includes most of the big name stores and all the main banks and building societies. Brixton market is great for bargains, variety and fun. You can also visit the arts market on a Saturday. In the next year a new retail development next to the tube station will open.

There are over and under ground rail stations, frequent bus services and main road links into and out of London. The area has a variety of property types with up-market street properties in Brixton and those with potential for refurbishment selling like hot cakes Brixton recently won government and private investment in a major refurbishment of the town centre and CCTV is now installed.

Another scheme has created a new town centre park, Windrush Square, south of the Tate library, opposite the Town Hall. Public housing estate tenants are working with the Council and winning funding for improvements.

Community partnerships are taking strategic action to overcome Brixton's continuing poverty and social deprivation. The Council's successful City Challenge bid marked the start of Brixton's economic revival. Youth, education, employment, housing, older people, community safety and environmental improvement are just some areas receiving special attention.
